Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Early Bird discount?

Early Bird prices apply when you book and pay at least 7 days in advance. Early Bird lessons are non-refundable, but they are the best-value way to take regular lessons — you can save around £5 per hour compared to the standard rate. You can see current prices on our Prices page.

What is the 5-Hour Introduction to Driving course?

The 5-Hour Introduction to Driving is a structured starter package designed for complete beginners. Across five hours you will cover car controls, moving off and stopping safely, steering, and basic manoeuvres — giving you the confidence and skills to continue with regular lessons. It is a great way to find out whether you enjoy driving before committing to a full course.

Does Sutton Driving School offer automatic lessons?

Paige teaches manual transmission only — and that is very much a deliberate choice. Here is why it matters to you as a learner:

A manual licence is a full licence. Pass your test in a manual car and you are legally entitled to drive both manual and automatic vehicles for the rest of your life. Pass in an automatic and your licence is restricted to automatics only — you would need to take a separate test to drive a manual.

The practical benefits of learning manual include:

  • More choice — the vast majority of used cars on the road in the UK are still manual, so your options when buying your first car are far wider.
  • Lower running costs — manual cars are generally cheaper to buy, insure, and service than automatics.
  • Greater control — understanding how to manage gears, clutch, and engine braking gives you a deeper feel for the car and makes you a more confident, safer driver in challenging conditions.
  • Transferable skills — if you ever drive abroad, hire a van, borrow a friend's car, or take on a role that requires driving, you will not be caught out.

In the workplace, a manual licence is essential. Many employers — particularly in trades, logistics, sales, healthcare, and field service roles — specify a full manual licence as a job requirement. Company cars, pool vehicles, vans, and lorries are overwhelmingly manual. An automatic-only licence can quietly close doors on promotions, job offers, and career changes you have not even considered yet. Passing your test in a manual ensures your licence is never the reason you miss an opportunity.

Learning manual is undeniably harder at first, but Paige's calm, patient approach means pupils build confidence quickly. The extra effort at the start pays dividends for decades of driving — and decades of working.

How do block bookings work?

A 10-hour block booking lets you pay for ten hours of lessons upfront at a discounted rate. Block bookings offer excellent value for learners who are ready to commit to regular lessons and want to make steady, consistent progress. Hours can be used flexibly — split across multiple sessions to suit your schedule.

Do you offer driving lesson gift vouchers?

Yes! Driving lesson gift vouchers are available in any value and make a thoughtful, practical present for learner drivers of any age. Recipients can redeem them against any lesson type and book at a time that suits them. Vouchers are a popular gift for birthdays, Christmas, and passing exams.

How long is the wait for a driving test date?

Test centre waiting times in the Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham area are currently several months. DVSA test slot availability fluctuates, but at busy times learners can face waits of three to six months or more. Paige will help you book your test at the right time and can advise on using the DVSA rebooking tool to pick up earlier cancellations. The sooner you start lessons, the more prepared you will be when a slot becomes available.

Is there a waiting list to learn with Paige?

Due to high demand, Paige does operate a waiting list for new pupils. If lessons are not immediately available, you are welcome to join the list and Paige will be in touch as soon as a slot opens up. To register your interest, please use the contact form or call 0121 513 0121 — providing your preferred days, times, and location makes it easier to match you quickly.
